Did you know that there is age discrimination when it comes to renting cars? It has been seen that people who are under 21 have practically no chances of renting cars from big car rental companies unless they work for the government or the military. |
In fact, New York is the only state in the US that has a law that allows car rental companies to rent out cars to drivers who are 18 years and older. So, you can be an adult at 18 but you will not be able to rent a car in all other states of the US. In fact, most car rental companies refuse to rent cars to people who are under 25. The reason for this is that these young drivers are seen as high-risk drivers because of the high accident rates among drivers who are under 25.
However, most people believe that car rental companies are indulging into age discrimination as all drivers under 25 should not be treated the same. However, this does not mean that drivers between 21 and 25 years cannot rent a car. They can but with certain extra payments. For instance, they would have an underage surcharge which is between $10 and $25 per day.
Car rental companies contend that this surcharge helps to pay for the high cost of repairs and liability claims connected with younger drivers. However, it has been seen that some car rental companies purposely have high surcharges to dissuade younger drivers from renting cars.
However, the smaller car rental companies that are independently owned or are franchises have policies that allow them to rent out vehicles to younger drivers. This is primarily because they do not believe in following the rules laid out by the corporate office, or are just more accommodating when it comes to renting out cars to younger drivers.
