As the baby boomers continue to age, the number of Americans over 40 will reach an unbelievable figure. That is why age discrimination at workplace is such a hot topic. However, it is believed that there is a controversial aspect to age discrimination. In fact, age discrimination may not appear to be what is always seems. |
There are some who believe that there is more to age discrimination than the age itself. The fact could like in the energy levels and performance of older workers. It is not a surprise that the controversy surrounding age discrimination will heighten over the years as the number of Americans who are 65 and older will double in the next 30 years.
Of late, many court cases have been ruled in favor of employers who have fired higher paid older employees for lower paid younger one. A case that comes to mind is that of a 49-year old aerospace accountant who was fired when his company decided to downsize. The court believed that even though companies fire older employees when they downsize, it is not age discrimination. Rather it is viewed as a way of saving the company money in a legal manner.
This said, there are still around 30 percent to 40 percent age discrimination cases that are ruled in favor of employees.
It has been seen that younger employees are more than willing to put in long hours in order to move up the corporate ladder. On the other hand, older employees put their families before their work. This is perceived badly by the companies, which feel that the older employees are not working as hard as they used to. This means that older employees have to work harder to show that they still have the energy and zest to work and deliver. And, it is these attributes that are taken into consideration.
