Contenders against same sex marriage argue that legalizing same sex marriage means that the society approves homosexuality, and this, in turn, would result in more people leading a homosexual lifestyle. And, this lifestyle is against all laws of nature. Proponents of same sex marriage consider marriage to be a union between two people of the opposite genders. The prime aim of a marriage is procreate. However, if same sex marriages are legalized, they would go against parental concerns, traditions, religious beliefs and may lead to homophobia.

Supporters of same sex marriage often base their thoughts on universal human rights, liberty, equality and the right to make personal decisions without unwanted government interference. They also argue that the decision to enter into civil marriage should be the prerogative of the couple involved and should be a civil right irrespective of the gender.

The Federal Defense of Marriage Act does not forbid same sex marriage. But individual states in the US have passed their own laws either to ban or allow same sex marriage. States like Massachusetts are free to issue marriage licenses to gay and lesbian couples. However, there are many who do not approve same sex marriages and therefore, one can say that there is discrimination against same sex marriage in the United States.

Many times, the discrimination against same sex marriage leads to homosexuals hiding their sexuality. It is more to do with fear of ostracization from society. However, this discrimination is not considered good by Human Rights group. They contend that all individuals should be allowed to lead a life of their choice without any fear from society or political groups.
