According to CNN Money, in 2006, there were 10 women managing Fortune 500 companies and only 20 in the top 1000. These days, more women are starting businesses and the majority of degree holders are women. However, majority of the women still have to face gender discrimination and racism.

Many employed women across the world are paid lower wages for the same work performed by men. In addition, they have little or no access to proper healthcare. For majority of the women, this sort of discrimination is either due to race or gender. Many times, women have to face both discriminations together. Factors like race, color, ethnicity, religion and nationality can give rise to problems for a particular group of women when compared to other women. Black migration continues to thrive among Afro-Americans in the US. In the North, these migrants found discrimination in the form low paying and hard jobs. Minority and indigenous women have limited access to job opportunities and are often on the lower most rung of the labor market. Many of these women hold jobs in free trade zones or unregulated sectors.

Based on certain investigations and surveys, it was discovered that African American women receive the lowest wages, they are employed in unhygienic conditions and face threefold discrimination. Though women have made significant strides, discrimination based on sex, race and ethnicity continues to exist against women in subtler forms than in the past. Occupational divide decreased in some areas but continues to remain intact in other areas.

The bottom line is that governments need to recognize gender discrimination and racism against women, and the impact they have on women. This should also include domestic violence, forced marriages, honor killing and other types of crimes committed against women from different ethnicities and religious backgrounds. And, the investigations should begin with analyzing the experiences many marginalized women have lived through.
