Positive Effect Of Gender Discrimination To Population

Gender discrimination refers to attitudes or beliefs that one gender is less competent to the other. This can result in prejudice or unfair treatment of that particular gender. In most cases, it has been seen that women are ones who often have to face gender discrimination.

However, modern civil rights laws have managed to bring about a lot of change in societal thinking, and they are instrumental in protecting anyone, man or woman, from gender discrimination.

In the US, women in the past did not enjoy the same rights and privileges that men enjoyed. They did not have the right to vote, and were required to handover their property to their husbands after marriage. It was commonly believed that a woman’s place was in the house, raising children and managing household affairs. Hence, women did not have access to the kind of educational opportunities that could have made them self-sufficient.

However, things started changing in the early eighteenth century when women were finally allowed to enroll in universities for the first time. State laws allowing women to retain their property after marriage were also passed. The first women’s right convention was also held to guard the rights and interests of women. In 1869, the Wyoming Territory passed a law which allowed women to vote and serve in courts. In 1920, women were finally given the constitutional right to vote.

In the 1960s, the women’s rights movement regained thrust. Many women entered the workforce and demanded equal rights and privileges. In response, the Congress passed the Equal Pay Act of 1963 which forbade employers from discriminating employees based on gender, and employers were forced to pay men and women equal wages for the same job.

The positive effect of gender discrimination to the population can be viewed when it comes to the different laws that have been passed over a period of time that have made gender discrimination illegal. In addition, many organizations, especially smaller and medium sized businesses, are being run by proficient women. Women are no longer relegated to household chores. Instead they are a force to reckon with.
