Gender discrimination refers to the practice wherein women or girls do not get access to the same opportunities that men or boys get in the field of education, employment, sports, or any other fields. Women are, sometimes, underpaid even when they work is equal to men. Unfortunately, this practice exists even in developed nations like Canada and America. |
Gender discrimination exists in all realms of life -- at home, education, sports, military, and politics. In fact, every sphere of life has some or the other form of gender discrimination. Therefore, it is very difficult to say where this discrimination happens the most. Each woman who has been discriminated based on her gender will feel that in her field maximum gender discrimination occurs.
There are many reasons for gender discrimination. One of the root causes may be culture. Culture instills a sense of expectations or attributes that are associated with both genders. This gives rise to definite patterns how men and women are perceived and what they should be working at. Media is another factor for this discrimination. It portrays men as active, aggressive and able; while women are shown as pretty and passive beings.
Most countries have laws to fight gender discrimination but many of the laws have been ineffective in stopping it. This is primarily because of the societal attitude to women who are seen more as mothers and homemakers. However, even at home in certain cultures the women and girl child are discriminated against when compared to the men folk of the house. Therefore, laws have to encompass all the areas where gender discrimination occurs. But unfortunately this may not be possible until society changes the way it looks at women and the roles they are expected to play.
