Although America is the melting pot of different ethnic cultures, racism is a reality that many people live with. With the economic downturn and loss of jobs, many civil right lawyers are worried that there would be an increase in racial discrimination against Mexicans and other Latin Americans. |
While it has mostly been the discrimination against African Americans that has always been highlighted, people should not forget that Mexicans and Hispanics are also subjected to similar sort of discrimination. In fact, it is believed that Mexicans and Hispanics have to face racial discrimination everyday not just at their workplace also in their daily lives.
Studies have shown that three in ten Mexicans and Hispanic workers feel that they have been discriminated against at their workplace. Some people have also been subjected to racial slurs, while others have been paid less than their co-workers and denied promotions.
Statistics from the FBI show that there is a significant increase in hate crimes against Hispanics. It is ironic that many the people who perpetrate hate crimes are increasing because the general American population is worried about illegal immigration.
Although the fence that being built along the US-Mexico border was to prevent entry of terrorists and drugs into the country, the fence is being viewed now as a way of preventing the movement of people and goods from Mexico to the US. The Mexican government along with many other people from within the US has strongly opposed to the construction of the fence.
A lot of the racial discrimination against Mexicans can be attributed to popular culture where Mexicans are usually portrayed as bandits or members of street gangs. This has led to people stereotyping Mexicans and associating them with violence and illegal activities. Of course, the main reason for discrimination against Mexicans is the illegal migrants who somehow manage to find their way into the US.
