Racial discrimination is a fact of life for many immigrants and ethnic minorities in the United States. For decades now African Americans, Hispanics, Asians and Latin Americans have been facing discrimination not just at their workplace but also in their daily lives. |
In fact, recent research shows that with increase in unemployment and the global economic downturn, the number of hate crimes against immigrants and non-Caucasians has increased.
However, the good news is that there are organizations within the US that fight against racial discrimination. While some are non-profit organizations, others are administered and run by the US government.
Workplace racial discrimination charges can be filed with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). If you have been subject to unfair practices at work because of your race, origin or ethnicity, you can file charges with the EEOC, which is federal agency that enforces anti-discrimination laws at different workplaces.
Of course, at global level there are organizations like the United Nations that have taken pledge to eradicate racism in all its forms. But many private human rights organizations like the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) and ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union) have taken it upon themselves to fight racism in the US. Even churches from different denominations are active in fighting racial discrimination within the country.
The US government has enacted a lot of laws to ensure that racism does not rear its ugly head constantly, but many times nothing is done against perpetrators of this crime. For instance, although there is the Fair Housing Act that cannot deny a potential tenant rental accommodation based on his skin color or ethnicity, there could be landlords who are not very happy to have such tenants.
