Racial Discrimination Against Indian Doctors In USA

According to the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin, there are around 35,000 doctors of Indian origin in the country. Most Indian doctors living in the US are highly qualified and contribute productively to the society. However, being an Indian doctor in the US is not without the risk of racial discrimination.

Many patients are skeptical about being treated by Indian doctors and nurses. In fact, a study has shown that many Indian nurses working in the US have been harassed by patients or their families at some point or the other. The racial discrimination faced by Indian doctors also is prevalent within the medical fraternity.

Many doctors of Indian origin do face some form of racial discrimination when applying for residency programs in the US. However, there are some who feel that Indian doctors may be making a mountain of a molehill. The doctors may feel racially discriminated when, in fact, they have a language barrier as they have not managed to learn American idioms and other nuances of the language. This may be true for some doctors who come to the US to do their residency but not for doctors who were born and/or brought up in the US. Therefore, this justification does not sound plausible.

The fact remains that Indian doctors do have to face a certain amount of racial discrimination in the US because of their skin color. However, this discrimination is not widespread and does not affect all. Many times these doctors are discriminated against due to mistaken identity.

However, it must be said that the US has laws to prevent any form of discrimination and people who are victims can get legal help and recourse.
