Racial wage discrimination occurs when wages are paid to employees based on race instead of performance or merit. This practice has been thriving in the US since a long time. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) does enforce anti-wage discrimination laws. However, it is not always successful. |
Statistics prove jobs held by women and minorities often do not get paid like white men. This difference is partly due to the fact that many of the jobs done by the Whites require higher education. Though there are laws to prevent discrimination, studies show that wage discrimination is widely practiced against women, African-Americans and Latinos. The normal perception is that wage inequality exists because Latinos lack English proficiency and the Blacks do not have the necessary educational qualifications.
Apart from racial discrimination, gender discrimination also exists wherein women are paid less than their male counterparts. Theorists contend that this gap is because men put in more work hours compared to women. Another reason is the lifestyle choice that women take. Women tend to opt for jobs that are fulfilling, flexible and safe. Yet another reason could be that women are emotional, and this may obstruct them from getting higher pay. They tend to take things personally.
There are laws that prohibit discrimination at workplace. However, it is difficult to eradicate wage discrimination because of the difficulty involved raising cases against employers and winning. Therefore, many experts believe that there should be job audits and monitoring at local, state and federal level to get rid of wage and racial discrimination at workplace.
