Some of the common federal employment laws are as follows:

• Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA): The FLSA is applicable to employers involved in interstate commerce with two or more employees. It focuses on minimum wage and states a standard 40 hour work week. It also sets a minimum wage per hour and minimum age for employment.
• Social Security: Each employer must maintain a record of the Social Security Number of each employee. The employer also should procure an employer identification number from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) by way of an application.
• Federal Insurance Contributions Act (FICA): This includes the social security tax and the Medicare tax. These taxes are to be paid by the employer and the employee. In case of the employee, the taxes are withheld from his wages.
• Medicare: Medicare is the health insurance program established under Federal Insurance Contributions Act (FICA). Taxes are paid by the employer and the employee. Here also the employee's taxes are withheld from the wages.
• Equal Pay Act (EPA): The act states that all employees are to be paid fairly if jobs are performed with the same skill and effort. There should be no discrimination based on gender.
• Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA): The act states that employers should verify whether alien applicants, who have applied for jobs, are authorized to work in America. In addition, the employer cannot discriminate an alien employee based on his nationality or origin if he is legally able to work.
• Federal Unemployment Tax Act (FUTA): Under the act, if the employee is terminated or fired due to no fault of his, the employer has to give compensation for a particular period of time. In addition, employers receive a credit in federal taxes for the taxes paid to the state.
