Who Benefits From Child Labor ?

Children across the world work in one way or the other. They have to help their parents at their home or stay back after school few hours or do some work during their holidays to earn pocket money. But this is part of growing up. However, it is child labor where children are exploited that is a major concern around the world.

It is because of child labor that many millions of children are denied their rights to survival, basic education and a normal childhood. Poverty is the main cause of child labor. This forces children to work full time to support their families.

While child labor is something that needs to be eradicated, there are some who benefit from it. In fact, one cannot view child labor as black and white. The people who benefit from child labor are ones who hire children to work. It is generally considered that child labor is cheap as they are paid much less than their adult counterparts. The children are often considered to be irreplaceable because of their age and their so-called dexterity.

While employers who use child labor can reduce their labor costs and increase their bottom line, one must not forget that because of child labor many poor families are able to eat a decent meal. In societies that lack a free public education, children are encouraged to work as they provide a source of supplementary income to the family.

However, not all reasons for using child labor are economic. Businesses hire children and adults on a per person basis. This means that many times a business actually does not save on labor costs when hiring children to work. Therefore, one can assume there must be a non-economic reason for child labor. Many children work as unpaid workers in family farms or businesses that depend on family labor to help save money.

Child laborers can earn money for the family, but when they are unable to work anymore, they become a liability as they have no education to help them get any other type of job.
