According to a report by Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, nearly 40% of car crashes take place at intersections. However, the number of accidents that occur at traffic signals have also increased. |
Reckless driving where motorists disregard the traffic signals is said to be the major cause of most of the crashes. According to the report, crashes resulting from the running of red lights are more prevalent in cities. The crashes were seen to have been caused by motorists who were below the age of thirty. Most of them were male. In addition, these males who ran the red lights causing accidents had prior moving convictions and violations for driving while drunk and being in possession that were invalid. Motorists that run red lights at night were seen to possess different characteristics from those that ran the lights during the day. Unlike those who ran the lights during day-time, those that ran the lights at night were young, again below 30 years, were male and had deviant characteristics. For instance, of those that were caught running the lights at night approximately 53% had high concentrations of alcohol in their blood. Running red lights results in crashes that cause the death of more than 800 people every year. Over half of these people are hit by motorists who do not stop when the red light comes on. Another 200000 people suffers minor and serious injuries. It is for this reason that law enforcers have taken to using cameras to catch those who violate the red light traffic rule.
