There are numerous reasons why motorists run the red light. It could be that they are in hurry, are distracted or because they think that because there is no car in sight they can simply drive on. Local governments have been thinking of ways to stop motorists from running red lights at intersections. |
One way has been to increase the amount of time that the yellow-light is on. Most if not all motorists are aware that yellow (amber) means get ready. This method is already in use in states such as California and Virginia. It has been seen as an effective ways of avert accidents. Adding a clearance interval that is all red, a period where lights in all the directions are red, is another way that can be used to stop motorists from running red lights. The yellow light makes it possible for drivers who are unable to stop to drive through intersections before lights turn red. However, it is possible for motorists to misjudge the time they may require to drive through the intersection. By adding an interval that is red right after the phase with yellow lights is sure to reduce the number of unnecessary accidents. The interval has been seen to be effectives in places such as Detroit and Michigan. Not being able to clearly see traffic lights is one reason why motorists run the red lights. By making the traffic lights more visible, local governments may be able to prevent the running of red lights.
